Hello and welcome. I’m J. James,
And I create large-scale portraits using a hand-applied halftone dot technique. From a distance, the portraits appear meticulously precise, but up close, their flaws become clear—dots that are uneven, lines that aren’t perfectly straight, and a deliberate lack of symmetry. This contrast reflects the complexities of the human condition: what we see from afar often obscures the imperfections that make us compelling up close.
It is these imperfections that make the portraits feel familiar—like someone you know. Whether it’s someone you’ve encountered, someone you’ve seen in the mirror, someone you’ve related to or empathized with, or someone you’ve only heard about, my work captures narratives and offers a commentary on everyday society, just as we all do.
